Ford came out with Speed Density first, and basically an engineer sat down and wrote a program based on the current data he had on hand, as in engine size, design, and what ever other variables where involved with that engine and that vehicle operating program is pretty much set in stone. When you turn the key on, and start a vehicle with this system, you will get the same result each and every time. The room for varying any parameters if very minuscule.

Ford eventually got a bit wiser and switched over to Mass Air Flow. Mass Air Flow (MAF) is very different in the sense that it has a meter in the air induction tubing that measures the volume of air ( the Mass of Air Flowing over a meter that calculates the volume of air flowing past it) going into the engine and based on that volume, it makes instantaneous decisions about how much fuel to add and where the ignition timing should be.

Based on these simple facts, when you start to modify an engine in a car with a Speed Density system, you are going to in fact make the engine run more poorly, even though you may have done some exhaust upgrades or installed a better flowing intake or bigger cam, because that computer is programmed to run according to its original engine design, and it will never recognize all the upgrades you have done. Because of our colder climate in Manitoba, I opted for a redesign of the wall assembly. This redesign uses the same cable tension system, but adds the extra rigidity of oriented strand board (osb) panelling layered with a 16 ounce tarpaulin on the exterior.

I began by splitting the four-foot by eight-foot panels into two-foot widths and 7-foot heights. Because the diameter of the yurt was set at 28 feet, I required 44 panels. The framing of the osb segments consisted of 2-by-4 studs, cut on the outside edge to a 4-degree angle, with a 6′8.5″ height. Each panel, consequently, would connect at an 8-degree angle to the adjacent panel, for a total of 352 degrees (margin of error provides total of 360 degrees). Between each stud, a 16.5 inch cross-stud, or plate was inserted. The top cross-stud was fastened 1.5 inches below the upper edge of the osb, to allow for the insertion of a top plate connecting each panel. The bottom cross-stud was fastened 2.0 inches above the upper edge, allowing for a bottom plate and 1/2 inch overhang (to reduce backflow of rain water runoff into the yurt).

Next, twenty-two 2-foot lengths of 2″ by 8″ boards were cut. Those segments were marked to allow for four sections of v-shaped 1.5″ wide pieces, each with a four degree slope on each length of the “vee.” These form the segments of top and bottom plates. Prior to screwing these pieces into their appropriate location, four pilot holes were drilled in each piece, to minimize splitting.

I then scribed a 28-foot circle on the deck for the yurt, and screwed the 2-foot long v-shaped plates along that perimeter. The first panel was subsequently raised in place on two of the plates, so that twelve inches of each “vee” supported 1/2 of the bottom cross-stud in the panel. Adjacent segments also were raised into place, and each panel secured to the other using a 4″ by 2″ metal tie plate, and secured to the base with screws through the osb.

All of these panels together form a complete circle. I temporarily bound them together by using 2″ by 4″ studs across the span of the walls, and supported using bracing, in the same way that conventional walls are temporarily secured.

The exterior wall tarpaulin will be installed after windows, doors and roofing assemblies are completed.

In the next article, I will discuss how to install the aircraft cable tension system, as well as an exterior strapping system that provides additional stability. Subsequent articles will discuss door & window installation and roof structure assembly.
